For this second reunion movie, as with the first, ond yes, some of the series eps themselves, a better job could have been done here. No question about that.
And there's no question in my mind, after watching it again after a long lapse of time that as with the first reunion movie, our guys gave their all in this project. They always did and they always would, we all know that. And sad to say, the writers let the stars, the guests and the viewers down A LOT and that also means the producers and directors who had as much to do with this movie as the actors themselves. And that very much includes Victor Buono, who was tangled in a parody of Henry Kissinger... a slapstick parody of Henry Kissinger... sigh... 'this is a peace conference!' BAM POW, WOOF! WOOF! If they got Victor back, why not as the great Count Manzeppi? Sigh.
Okay as noted above there were good points: Robert and Ross both looked pretty darned good and for once I really liked Robert with a mustache. [in Fatal Trap I hated it]. And they were still having some fun as much as the script let them, anyhow. I like Emma Samms and would like to have seen as much of her British agent character as we saw of Penelope in the first movie, sigh.
Now, about those other points: the not so good ones:
Why out of nowhere is there this Albert Parradine, Jr? Why not Senior? Where did the character pop up from? Why did 'Skinny' Malone refer to this villain as 'A.P.' the way he might an old acquaintance? And how come why for are we treated to the explosive murders of A.P. Jr's brothers in such a hurried fashion? There's no back story and no reason given. Oh, he's just crazy so he blew up his apparently nearly identical brothers? Were they quintuplets? Were they all crazy? Writerly minds want to know! And imo so do viewers. Why were we even supposed to care about Paradine or his late brothers? And most of all, why didn't the writers resurrect a known villain from the series or one of his/her descendants? Did Doctor Faustina have a daughter, for example? Did Noel Vautrain's niece decide to go bad at some point? Did Dr. Arcularis come back to get back at our guys? See what I mean? Also, what about all those duplicates of Miguelito, Jr?
And finally: at least for now:
Why did we have the exact same bomb in the second movie as in the first? [Except the second one was smaller]
Why did the productions go with a hydrogen or nuclear bomb image? I could have done without that in both movies. A little more imagination and a little more traditonally Wild, Wild West [proto-steampunk] weaponry would have served the story, the actors and the viewers far, far better imo.
So, whatdy'a think?
