I can't say exactly why, but the first few times I watched this episode, I really didn't care much for it. I'm also not sure what changed my mind. I know I read others' opinions and viewpoints, and maybe that influenced me. But eventually Burning Diamond grew on me and now it is one of my favorites. The concept of melting diamonds to create an elixir that allows the body to move so fast as to be invisible is fascinating. (I'm surprised Dr. Loveless hasn't come up with it!)
Does anyone know if diamonds can really be melted? Guess I should do some Googling!
There are a lot of great scenes.
Such as when Baines comes to chew Jim out and Artie stands behind Baines, mugging.
When Artie tries to make the guy who opens the door understand him and talks in so many different languages. Might be the only time in the series when the actual foreign language words are in the closed captioning rather than just saying "speaks foreign language."
When Artie arrives at the mansion, Jim escapes from Midas and they take out the two servants... then they look at each other with satisfaction (short-lived).
Tied back to back in the chair in their shirtsleeves. "You know, I wish the same thing too..."
In the museum when Midas pulls the knife on Jim and Artie gets slightly upset.
When they are in the jail cell, and Artie leans back on the cot, smug and happy as Jim uses the acetylene cigar on the bars (the guard must have been gone a long long time!).
When Artie jumps on the board to propel Jim up to the window and runs under the window, ready to catch him.
Then Artie momentarily feels he has to clean up the mess...
One of those episodes that I wish had a clearer tag. I wonder if Lucretia joined all the other lovely ladies who got off scot-free in season 1... simply because she couldn't shoot Jim.
9 of 10 for Burning Diamonds.
